Fairwell To CSI Las Vegas a Loss That Will Be Felt

CSI broke the mold when it came to criminal prodedural shows. CSI was about the science, it was the first show that was about smart people being the hero’s and saving the day.

This might not sound so geeky.  But I am irked, sad and disappointed in what seems like a long line of bad decision’s as of late by CBS. (Spoiler Alerts For Those Who Haven’t Caught Up on CSI and the News about CSI Las Vegas) I have spent the last few weeks on and off binging on CSI Las Vegas Episodes on Hulu. Though I am not all the way through it, I have gotten through the Lawrence Fishburne Episodes

and at least a season of Ted Danson Episodes, and Catherine Leaving (So Sad!). CSI Las Vegas has been officially cancelled! and it’s send off will be a 2 hour feature television film send off on September 27th 2015, featuring all the original (sans the dead cast members ala Warrick Brown) cast members, including Marg Helgenberger (CSI Catherine Willows ) and William Petersen (CSI Gil Grissom)

What is unclear is what cast members who became regulars and left will join. Due to his exit I doubt there will be an appearance of Dr. Langston (Lawrence Fishburne) and although George Eads  (CSI Nick Stokes) has already left the show to “run CSI San Diego” word is he is in for sure. So far as is Jorja Fox (Sara Sidle)Eric Szmanda (Greg Sanders), Robert David Hall (Dr. Robinson), David Berman (“Super Dave” The Assistant Corner),  Wallace Langham (David Hodges) , Elisabeth Harnois (Morgan Brody) and Jon Wellner (Henry Andrews), Elizabeth Shue (Finn) and Ted Danson (D.B Russell).

That is all I know so far, but I will update as any further cast mates join up. CSI Las Vegas Going off the air  is like a fair well to science being cool. CSI was the show that broke the mold, others have tried to replicate it– and because of CSI we have NCIS, Criminal Minds, Bones, Castle countless “criminal procedure” shows but CSI was different. It was about THE SCIENCE!, it was the first show that was about smart people being the hero’s. Where Gil Grissom,  by all television and movie standards was not the most attractive lead, but he was the most revered. His leaving the show was the beginning of the end. His character was the nerd of all nerds and he trained those who would go on to be leads in the show like George Eads (Nick Stokes) and Eric Szmanda (Greg Sanders)

Each taking on part of his characteristics (Entomology, DNA, Anthropology, History) as part of what made them special characters. I like to look at the character of Nick Stokes because in any sort of normal procedural crime show he would have been the kickass, Texas badass cop who showed no cracks.  Much like, the character, FBI Agent Morgan, from the television show Criminal Minds–but the two are polar opposites. They took that assumption and dumped it on its head- They took a,good looking, cop, and jock from Texas and they made him into one of the most lovable characters on the show. He was the guy who admitted to being molested, he was the guy who could relate to kids and worked hardest for those cases. He was the CSI who saved the police dog. He was the CSI who cried and he was also the one who had everyone’s back. He was also an entomologist, the arson guy, he was also the car guy. He, for me at least, broke the mold as far as what a “perfect man” could be. I don’t know if there is a real Nick Stokes out there. But if there is, he is my dream man.

The word is, so far– is that Ted Danson‘s character DB Russell and perhaps a few others will be going to join CSI Cyber, which stars Academy Award winner Patricia Arquette. CBS Cyber will be moving it to Sunday’s during in the fall. Peter MacNichol will departing for Season 2, as the assistant director of the FBI.  (which does open a door for a certain character who did leave CSI to join the FBI but that is just MY speculation) I have watched a few episodes of CSI Cyber. While I love Patricia Arquette, nothing about this show says CSI. This show is a cross between Scorpion and Criminal Minds and different than CSI all the spinoffs– because they work for the FBI. FBI, does all of it’s lab work, the science, at it’s lab in Quantico, Virginia.   CSI Cyber also had a strong “Rip Off” smell from the  MTV show “Eye Candy” (Which was recently cancelled) . It seems to me, that the safest bet would have been to merge CSI Cyber into CSI Las Vegas due to the spinoff not doing any better in ratings than the flagship. But CBS doesn’t always make much sense to me. I don’t have much faith in CSI Cyber, you can throw all the celebrity you want, but if it is not genuine then people will move on.

With shows like CSI and Criminal Minds I wonder how many kids went into forensics and criminology that otherwise wouldn’t have known anything about it. I wonder when the science part of the”criminal procedure” is not emphasized will there be funding for forensic camps, and endowments for forensic programs at universities like there are now. Many don’t know that one of the top job recruiters in college is the CIA and FBI, since 2000 when CSI started the competition to join these forensic programs and study criminology has increased exponentially, and as a result there are better trained police officers, FBI agents, CIA officers out in the world today. It makes me sad to KNOW that this is the beginning of the END of an early knowledge that science can solve crimes just as well as anything else. That being into bugs or history or anything that maybe most people aren’t isn’t a bad thing, and that there are very successful people who are into those things make a difference in this world. Yes, CSI was fictional but make no mistake it was the first mainstream, prime time television show to show nerds and geeks as being the hero’s and even those who weren’t as nerdy as their peers, some proved to be very deeply flawed people,  they were still capable of being the hero’s and achieving success. These lessons aren’t shown in the media anymore. Sometimes it’s forgotten just how much impact television and film has in shaping people’s very core by the people who make the big decisions. The show was cancelled after scoring just over 11 million viewers in season 14, to just 8.3 million for Season 15, according to Nielsen ratings. At its height, CSI attracted 26 million American viewers and 63 million viewers worldwide. CSI is the seventh longest-running US primetime show of all time and was, according to Eurodata Worldwide, the most watched show in the world. It won the International Television Audience Award for a Drama TV Series at the the Monte Carlo Television Festival five times in seven years. I think that there is a larger issue at hand at CBS and I will go into that later, but CBS doesn’t seem to know it’s market very well. While it’s about to dive into the world of Superhero’s it has no idea about the world of nerds, and it thinks it does because of the Big Bang Theory. A show that without commercials runs less than 20 minutes and the actors make about a million dollars an episode. This will be an interesting fall season, until then. I’m back to binge watching! Thanks for Reading!
