To be honest, I don’t know why they did this movie the way they did. There were some really good moments but this movie tried to pack in an ensemble cast, backstories, two Villian showdowns, and another brief teaser to the Justice League.
I have to say that Will Smith did a great job, probably the best as Deadshot. He carried the movie. I was surprised with how good El Diablo was, the conversation they have at the bar and his back and fouth with Will Smith was one of the best parts of the movie. I wish I had better things to say about Harley Quinn because I love her as a comic book character and she is complex. She had some good scenes, no doubt but Margot Robbie may look the part but she doesn’t go all in.
Jared Leto as the Joker was my least favorite character. I suppose when you look at the two jokers prior to this, Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson in the same chracter but almost a different genre. Tim Burton’s Batman is certainly different than Christopher Nolan’s but they were both excellent. The Joker reminded me of James Franko in the movie “spring breakers” with his gold teeth, and a great laught the first and second time you hear it but it made me cringe after a while. The fact that he dresses like he’s “Pretty fly for a white guy” oh I don’t know, I just didn’t like him. The joker is Batman’s supervillian because they are not just crazy, but intelligent and disturbed, in a disturbing way. It’s hard to explain exactly but I’m hoping other people will understand this.
I really did not like Captain Boomerang, I thought they tried to use him as comic relief and he wasn’t, just annoying as could be. Katana was cool, I always have loved her character. I thought they did excellent casting with Rick Flag and Scott Eastwood. Same with Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
My next big irritation was The Enchantress. I have no doubt as to the actresses capabilities that she could have contributed to the movie but she was mostly a dubbed over special effect and The Enchantress has been in so many things for so long I was disappointed. They could have used her acting chops to make a better movie.
The movie was written and directed by David Ayer and I think someone else should take the reigns for the next one. People who can really understand the intricate nature in how a comic book character or villian are designed. I am sick and tired of people taking these illustrated, literature treasures and catering to the supposed majority of people who don’t know their comic history. There were huge opportuntiies missed here and that seems to be a trend with DC as of late. Yes it made a gob ton of money so there will be many more sequels and now we are back to another joker and batman showdown coming with the Justice League.
So because I didn’t hate the movie but I wasn’t really into it all that much I would give it a C+ not comparing it to any other movies but there was so much talent and potential just wasted.
What did you think?
